Marine GPS receivers and devices like GPS Garmin Marine and Furuno Marine electronics main GPS receiver but iPhones and iPads can be also explored and possibly used as GPS receiver with its marine applications. To locate stores, streets, places and other establishments, people can refer to their iPhones for directions. Information, directions and routes are provided by Google Earth, Maps and other travel apps. For sea navigation, there are also useful marine apps for iPhones.

Just when we thought it couldn't get any better, Garmin introduces the newest addition to their line of GPS running watches, the Garmin Forerunner 610.  This is Garmin's first sport watch to feature a touch screen.  The Forerunner 610 is Water-resistant and meets IPX7 standards, which means it is submersible to 1 meter for 30 min.  Naturally, it can also withstand sweat and rain, but in spite of this toughness, it's sensitive enough to be used while wearing running gloves.  Simply tap or swipe the touch screen to view performance data, scroll through menus and even change settings.

With the Garmin 610 runners still get all the important statistics they're accustomed to including distance, pace, calories, GPS location and more. Already being described as Garmin's new flagship model, this Forerunner offers vibrating alerts for when beeping alerts cannot be heard. Garmin Dezl 560 and Other GPS Technologies For Truckers

One of the latest GPS devices to be introduced specifically for truckers, is Garmin Dezl (pronounced diesel) 560 series.  These Dezl devices are pre-loaded with vital information that can make life a bit easier for commercial truckers.  Some of the pre-loaded programs include systems to track hours, fuel usage and log mileage.  Garmin Dezl has also included truck-specific points of interest and the National Truck and Trailer Services (NTTS) Breakdown Directory, which gives basic information on at least 30,000 truck service and repair facilities both in the United States and Canada.

The information a driver inputs into the program logs regarding mileage and fuel usage, can later be downloaded to facilitate fleet management and tracking expenses.  It can also be exported for completion and submission of quarterly IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement) reports, which are required in many states.

Another very useful benefit is the range of services that can be searched, such as truck stops, restaurants, motels, rest areas, weigh stations.  When searching truck stop locations, you will find that available services, such as WiFi and showers, are listed for each location.

The points of interest feature can be rated by users and the ratings shared with others once the unit is connected online to a computer.

The Garmin Dezl 560 series was introduced in early 2011 and gives the user options for commercial trucking usage, a model designed for a Peterbilt (costing slightly more than the standard truck model), RV us and standard auto usage. 

Next in the review of new GPS technologies to hit the road is the tablet sized Magellan GPS navigator with a 7 inch screen.  Yes, that right - 7 inches!  It's called the Magellan Road Mate 9055 LM and comes with a lifetime of traffic and map updates and appears to better suited for commercial truckers and RV users.  The Road Mate 9055 is programmed with a full range of features that include spoken street names (not just spoken directions), lane assist, multi destination routing and points of interest information provided through the AAA tour book.

Now, get ready for this one - the Magellan Road Mate has audio/video inputs that that the screen can also be used to watch movies or be paired with a back-up camera.  This is just one more feature to help improve the quality of life on the road for commercial truckers, while giving them greater access to information, entertainment (when appropriate) and work related data.

Get Onboard the GPS Geocaching Express

Over the past ten years, adventure seekers have been involved in a high tech game of hide 'n seek through the use of their GPS devices.  The game is called Geocaching and, at last count, it has over 1 million players in over 100 countries around the world.  Sounds like an excellent way to increase your level of enjoyment as you hike and explore the wilderness with family and friends, or even go it alone.

Notwithstanding the efficiency of smartphones, this game is definitely enhanced by the use of a dedicated GPS personal navigation device (PND).  Makers such as Garmin, TomTom and Magellan all offer quality GPS systems which truly enhance the geocacher's experience.  The name of the game is derived from the token treasures and log book which are typically placed in an airtight, waterproof container and hidden somewhere.  Though the treasure may not typically have significant monetary value, it does have some personal value for the one who finds it.  The whole assembly is referred to as a geocache or just simply a cache.  The geographical GPS coordinates for the location of the caches are posted online.   Once you find the geocache, just log your discovery into the logbook tucked in with the treasure(s).  You can then choose to either add to the treasure, leave it as you found it, or take something away.  If you do decide to remove part of the treasure, fellow players recommend leaving something of value in place of the item removed, enhancing the find for the next player.

There are times when a treasure of noteworthy value is placed in the cache, however, these caches are usually hidden in GPS locations that are difficult and challenging to reach.  Having the coordinates for the cache is only half the battle.  Once you arrive, you must figure out exactly where the treasure has been hidden, buried, hung, placed, etc.  Be warned, as fellow geocachers can be extremely creative.

Prior to launching out into the game, do a little online research to learn the geocaching lexicon, get ideas about the types of containers players are using, learn where in the world the game is being played and even find out about the many interesting variations that exist.  Above all, remember to take time to enjoy the exercise.

GPS Messages From The Wilderness

Have you ever wondered how those wilderness adventurers are able to relay gps messages to the outside world when we sometimes have trouble making calls from certain locations in our neighborhood?  I used to have a neighbor who had to literally step outside of his home, into his backyard, in order to get a clear enough signal to make a call on his cell phone.  Yet, a wilderness hiker in a remote region of the mountains of Sierra Leone can make contact with whomever he desires. 

Care to know more?  If you're thinking satellite telephones, think again.  Though satellite telephones have been available for use in remote areas, and they do in fact work, unfortunately the cost is still prohibitive.  Here is the more affordable solution.  We can now use GPS satellite capabilities through a Spot Connect device in conjunction with a Smartphone.  This will allow the explorer to send brief text messages when necessary.  This technology may not be suitable for keeping and posting a journal or log, but it will allow for pertinent and emergency messages to reach the right party and get you the help you need when you need it.

Normally, when you're out hiking or climbing, the cell phone is unreliable if you're not in a narrow canyon or covered and surrounded by dense foliage.  Also, as my neighbor discovered, it is necessary to have a line of sight for good reception.  Though there are some limitations with this type of technology, it is well worth having as you venture out.  This new gps technology allows you to send brief, original text messages and even emails via satellite.  In order to send a message you must input the text into a GPS device, such as a Garmin or TomTom, or into a smart phone, which is linked to a transmitter.  The transmitter then sends the message to a satellite system and before you know it, your SOS is received.  No need to worry about blocked signals or dense conditions. 

Take the time to do some research on the ins and outs of using this particular set up because there is more to know about its use than what we're accustomed to with cell phones.  It will be well worth your time.

Allsport GPS Mobile App

Whether you're a marathon runner, a cyclist or simply enjoy long walks, there's something new on the market that covers all levels of exercise.  The Trimble AllSport GPS Mobile App has just what you're looking!  This just released app has integrated more than 20 statistics for the fitness enthusiast.  Not only does it allow you to plan ahead by giving you real time weather reports, but you can also search and view maps and parks using the Pro app.  This app makes it easy for the user to create a customized training program that provides data on the calories burned at any given time.  These are the types of amenities you would expect to see on a dedicated piece of GPS sport equipment.

According to Rich Rudow, General Manager for Trimble Outdoors, "When Trimble set out to create the next generation of our Android app, we first paired active athletes with our Trimble Outdoors Android engineers. Together, they collaborated on design and features. Next, we invited hundreds of people to test-drive the app in a closed beta for three months. The result is an AllSport GPS that's fine-tuned to the specific needs of outdoor fitness fans and the fastest growing smartphone market in the U.S."

In other words, before its launch, this app was seriously road tested by a mixture of athletes representing various types and styles of exercise regiments.  For more than three months, researchers had 350 users putting the app through its paces.  Over the three month period, the researchers recorded 1,800 activities of all types.  More than 17,000 miles had been clocked and approximately 9 million calories were burned in all.  Listed below are some of the features included with this app.

GPS Data Usage Revealed

TeleNav is one of the largest global location based services/mobile resource management (LBS/MRM) services provider in the world.  TeleNav GPS Navigator is used for both personal and business purposes, helping individuals make the most of their leisure or work time.  They have recently released statistics on how we use our GPS devices.  The data shows what and how we search, identifies our daily needs, appetites and so much more. 

It's fun to analyze the who, what, why and where of our national GPS usage.  For instance, when it comes to our eating out habits, did you know that pizza is the most searched cuisine in the nation?  Who knew?  Second to our craving for pizza is Chinese food.  You would think that burgers would have been high on this list, but it came in at #3 and was followed by American food in 4th place and finally Mexican cuisine at #5. 

Let's move on to the nation's most cost-conscious residents.  When it comes to searching out the best gas prices before filling up the tank, it looks like the winners live in Phoenix, AZ.  The folks in San Antonio, TX came in a close second with Cleveland OH, Detroit MI and Jacksonville FL filling the 3rd, 4th and 5th spots respectively.  Nice going for the nation's most thrifty residents.

Where in the country do we find our most impatient citizens?  All you need to do is check out the most traffic-plagued and grid-locked cities.  According to the TeleNav data, the majority of GPS device users with real-time traffic information and the option to route around traffic mishaps live in Los Angeles CA.  Not really a surprise, however, most of you were probably thinking New York City, right?.  Surprisingly, the Big Apple seems to be lagging at #3, and was beat out by Washington DC.  Rounding out the top 5 are Chicago IL as #4 and Atlanta GA is #5 on this list of hurried and impatient drivers.

Our final category covers the four most searched businesses and their locations, hours of operation etc.  If you guessed that #1 on this list is Wal-Mart, you would be correct.  No doubt the people in Phoenix are helping to keep Wal-Mart at #1.  I'm equally as sure that I've personally had something to do with keeping Starbucks at a solid #2 on the most searched businesses list.  With Target as #3, Best Buy as #4 and Bank of America holding at #5, we come to a close.

Question by ladylion215: Why does my GPS take me totally different directions on the way to and from a place?
For example, I went on a job interview that was an hour away today and the directions the GPS gave me for the way there and the way home were completely different. Also, I have used my GPS to go to a friend's new house a few times, each time leaving from my house, and the GPS took me a different route every time. This doesn't make sense to me. I also feel like it takes me a very round-about way sometimes instead of sending me on the quickest way. Why is this?

its where you are and the fix from the satellites //its always the shortest route from where you are/if you know the route start on your own and it will correct itself//i do it all the time because i dont want to go on a certain street etc

GPS Satellite Achieves 20 Years In-Orbit

The Global Positioning System recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. The US Air Force program has come a long way and is looking forward to many more years of technology and development.

On December 10, the United States Air Force celebrated the twentieth year of GPS systems in orbit around the earth, marking two decades of offering critical mapping data for government, commercial and personal use.

The Global Positioning System owes its success to Space Vehicle Number (SVN) 23, launched by Boeing (then the Rockwell Corporation), on November 26, 1990. The satellite was operational for navigation and timing two years later. Though it was expected to last just 7.5 years, with some repairs, it is now slated to live well into its 21st.

Originally, the satellite, Boeing's GPS Block IIA-10, appeared to be a failure. In just its first year, the satellite's ability to keep its solar arrays directed toward the sun appeared to be damaged and required the Air Force's 2nd Space Operational Squadron to manually point the arrays toward the sun for fourteen years. The machinery appeared to fix itself three years later. To date, the satellite maintains one of the best atomic clocks of the GPS fleet.

Global Positioning Systems remain under the purview of the US Air Force, and work with companies like Boeing to maintain the program, which have become critical to American infrastructure for government, private businesses and the general public. There are now 31 satellites in the GPS constellation of varying models.

In the two decades since its original launch, the Global Positioning System has been used for both military and civilian uses, and the GPS system continues to improve. Boeing launched the first of its twelve IIF satellites in August of 2010, and it is the most advanced Global Positioning System in history.

As Global Positioning Systems become more advanced, programs in space, home control and civilian uses will become nearly perfectly synchronized. With these technological improvements, satellites can utilize GPS to become the standard of timing, positioning and navigation.
