If you do choose to play a Paladin you have to abide by a strict morale code all the way through the game. If you are playing a Paladin and you deliberately commit an evil act you will lose your Holy Light abilties - all your magic basically. But playing a WoW character with a strong roleplaying stand point can be a lot of fun, and Paladins are respected or feared by all.

A Paladin can be built into the most dangerous fighter in the game if developed well. You have two choices really: that of creating the perfect tank, that is metal-clad and hard to even scratch, or you can create an offensive tank that can deal incredible damage.

Either way, Paladins also work on their Holy Light magic skills to build themselves up. It's almost unfair how powerful a Paladin can become when buffered by their magic - some of the Paladin's healing spells are the very best in the game for the amount of mana they cost. The only weakness of a Paladin is on their magic side: you can silence, interrupt them or dispell their spells with relative ease. But even then, a Paladin who is without magic for a few seconds is still a very strong fighter.

As you start to move up through the levels, you can take your Paladin down any one fo the 3 leveling paths they have: Holy Light, Protection and Retribution. Each and every Paladin really needs to put some attention into the Holy tree, for their spells and healing.

The Retribution tree is the tree that is focused on being able to deal heavy damage. It also has a few good defensive skills - parry for example. You will wield a 2-handed sword and deal out serious damage.

The Protection tree is the most popular for Paladins who are building up for questing with PvP groups. It's basically difficult to do damage to a Protection Paladin, they have so much defence. They make the perfect tank in a party - occupying all the enemies in close combat while the others attack from afar.
