Staphylococcus aureus are normal microbial inhabitants of human skin, nose, and ear canals and the most common cause of staph infections. While generally thought to be non-infectious and harmless, outbreaks of severe infections by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, have been increasing at an alarming rate in recent years with the numbers at least twice as high as researchers previously believed.
The antibiotic-resistant infections, commonly called MRSA, were previously mostly confined to hospital settings but outbreaks have been cropping with increasing frequency in schools, athletic facilities, nursing homes and more. In fact, a new study by the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that in 2005 they made an estimated 94,000 Americans seriously ill and killed almost 19,000, compared with 17,000 persons who died of AIDS.
The most common way that bacteria, viruses, and fungi spread from one person to another is by direct contact, especially the hands (cross contamination). Bacteria can spread to other people through skin-to-skin contact and from sharing items such as towels, soap, clothes and sports equipment. Skin infections start when bacteria get into a cut or scrape. When staphylococcus bacteria get into the body through a break in the skin, they can cause a staph infection.
Here are five simple steps you can take to reduce your chances of getting a staph infection:
1. Always practice good hygiene-wash your hands with soap and water frequently;
2. Avoid sharing personal items including towels and razors. These items can carry staph bacteria and can transfer it from one person to another;
3. Avoid contact with another person's wounds or bandages;
4. Protect cuts and scrapes from exposure by keeping them covered with a bandage;
One effective method of helping to protect against potentially dangerous germs and bacteria is to apply and maintain a topical antibacterial lotion on the skin. Such an agent kills or inhibits sensitive microbes, and reduces the likelihood of their transmission. One of the most effective antibacterial lotions is The Invisible Armor, an alcohol-free antibacterial skin sanitizer and protector. It is effective against most germs and bacteria, including Staph, MRSA, Shigella, C.Dificile and more. And unlike alcohol-based products (which have no residual germ-killing properties-once the alcohol evaporates in 15-30 seconds, the protection is gone), it protects against recontamination for up to (4) hours, even with repeated hand washings (without leaving a sticky or slimy film on your hands). Because it forms an invisible non-sticky, non-greasy protective layer on the skin, The Invisible Armor can be used anywhere on the body, making it ideal for use on cuts and scrapes to help prevent germs and bacteria from entering the body.
Independent laboratory studies have shown repeatedly that The Invisible Armor has definite value in reducing the numbers of pathogens, and maintains its protection for several hours. Thus, its routine use should be adopted as one of several strategies for reducing nosocomially transmitted disease agents.
